The monograph is based mainly on King's own collections; the type and figured material now belongs to the James Mitchell Museum, National University of Ireland, Galway, where King was professor of geology and mineralogy for many years.

Some species, over one-third identified by King, are carefully described and beautifully illustrated. In this monograph, the author deals with the species of the staphylinid tribe Coryphiini occurring in the Palaearctic Region.

The tribe is represented by 17 genera and 79 species. Two subtribes and 8 genera are described as new, and one subgenus is raised to genus. New combinations are proposed for 16 species, and 1 species is excluded from the : L.
